I CERTAINLY agree with David Bryant about York's 'average' wage. Maybe he should take the advice of councillor Ann Reid (yes, she of the parking charges) and move to Sheffield.

It is worth remembering that Ann made this outrageous comment before the LibDems even took control of City of York Council.

I think the council should remember who they are running this city for - us!

They seem to have let York become a victim of its own success, which is due in no small part to the ridiculous idea that York is some super-affluent city paved with gold.

Despite the lovely buildings, the reality is that York is a city where much of its traditional industry has been destroyed and the people who worked in it are now trying hard to make ends meet.

This is a good recipe for social division, frustration and resentment.

On the one hand we have people losing their jobs, on the other we have flats selling for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Estate agency appears to be the best career to choose in York.

Tourism is important, but it doesn't generate many highly paid jobs. All this creates a certain atmosphere in the city I find. I can feel it if I go into town of an evening, but I now rarely go despite improved transport links, because I just don't feel safe.

The romantic and affluent illusion of York is fine for a select few, but ordinary people earning ordinary incomes have to live here and raise families too.

Who cares about them? No one running York as far as I can see.

Morehall Close,

York.
