IN response to Mr and Mrs Wartho's question about city centre yellow lines (Letters, October 2), the council is responding to comments made that not all of the recently approved ones are necessary.

The council works with all the emergency services on an ongoing basis to ensure that they have the necessary access.

Disabled groups have welcomed the improved access that they have to the city centre after 6pm and we must not end that advantage in favour of a demand that people should be able to park as close as possible to their destination.

While I think that there are some streets which might be wide enough to introduce metered parking we need to ensure that we strike a balance between the needs of the emergency services and disabled people and desire to drive into the city centre.

That is why we will be consulting further before any decision is made.

Executive member for
