AS A CITY, York is what you might term "hostile" when it comes to dance music.
Yet from our very bosom has sprung Vector Lovers, an act whose stunning brand of quirky electro-funk and dreamy digital beats is poised to become an underground electronica hit.
A one-time computer games designer, Vector Lovers, aka Martin Wheeler, set up York label Iwari.com last year and released two limited edition singles, Roboto Ashido Funk EP and Electrobotik Disco/Girl & Robot, to critical acclaim.
He was quickly signed to Soma Records and spent the summer touring Europe, with a festival debut at T in the Park.
Taking his passions of robots, Japan and the 1980s as its theme, Vector Lovers' eponymous debut album is recorded entirely using cutting-edge software music studio Reason 2.5.
Despite this technology, his sound has a beautiful, timeless quality in the vein of Royksopp and Four Tet, evident on lullabies such as Girl & Robot and Tokyo Glitterati. Electrobotic Disco and Funk & Droid are bound to satisfy anyone in pursuit of killer beats.
He's a man of many talents: Martin is also responsible for the album's futuristic artwork.
Vector Lovers by Vector Lovers is out now on Soma Records.
