Judy Burnett is exhibiting Following The Sun, Seascapes And Landscapes, at Pocklington Arts Centre until October 30 with a private view on Sunday.

The York artist has spent a lot of time in the studio this summer. Oblivious to the weather in England, she has been developing work from sketchbook drawings made during her journeys around the Mediterranean earlier in the year and rekindling the atmosphere of hot southern climates.

Most of the work deals with the brilliant glowing colours and deep shadows caused by the sunlight in Mediterranean countries, which contrast with the cooler, softer colours of North Yorkshire landscapes.

Some of the work in this exhibition is mixed media drawing, but most is produced by monotype on paper, using a printing press.

The piece is then built up through a series of translucent layers of oil, opaque painting sticks and crayons. The aim is to keep the airy, spacious quality of the sketch and to retain the freshness of the initial response.

The exhibition also includes a series of small collages, which use textured papers created in the studio and acrylic and gouache paint.

Last year Judy had a show at the Norman Rea Gallery at the university and is now working towards a solo exhibition at Ken Spelman's Bookshop, in Micklegate, York, in December.
