CERAMICS by Ben Arnup, abstract paintings by Val Bestwick and sculpture by Eoghan Bridge are on show at Pyramid Gallery, Stonegate, York, until October 28.
Yorkshire potter Arnup's latest work concentrates on geometric forms, especially from Venetian floor designs. "This feels like a definitive stage for this type of design," he says. "My exhibition next year in Philadelphia also will be of those robust forms, as they are transportable."
The magnificence of glacial erosion in Alberta, Canada, the evidence of time passing in the faded frescos of Tuscany and the natural and man-made erosion scars of the North York Moors all combine to inform Bestwick's paintings.
This exhibition marks a return home for Val after exhibiting annually in Oxford and working with an earth-based community arts project in Hebdon Bridge, which involved liaising with York Archaeological Trust.
In his studio near York, sculptor Bridge likes to play with animal and human forms by setting them in unusual or surprising positions. His latest ceramic works, finished in acrylic, include a somersaulting horse and a woman pretending to shoot a pistol while riding a pig.
