WE fully agree with Mr Golding's letter regarding alternate facilities being provided by City of York Council in place of those lost at the Barbican (October 30).

However, in one aspect there is a discrepancy. While it is true the Over 50s keep fit classes are now held at the Railway Institute the facilities fall far short of those enjoyed at the Barbican.

For example, there is no swimming which many of the class members enjoyed after a keep fit class, and, to date, there are no stepping or weightlifting facilities.

Car parking will be more difficult as it is very limited. In the event that Nunnery Lane car park has to be used it will be more expensive than that at the Barbican at £2.50 as opposed to 30 pence.

City of York Council would not agree to providing the same privilege as currently enjoyed at the Barbican to users of sports facilities.

Moreover, the planning committee cannot plead ignorance in this matter. Prior to the meeting a memorandum stating our concerns was circulated to all members.

We maintained among other things that the council was in breach of a policy to ensure existing levels of leisure and recreation are retained and enhanced in order to contribute to the fulfilment and physical well-being of York's citizens.

The situation will not be improved when the much-vaunted new Barbican becomes available. There will be no sports hall large enough to house the eight badminton, volleyball and basketball courts now lost, or to hold keep fit classes for up to 90 people as in the past.

Not to worry though, as compensation we will be able to binge drink from 10am to 2am every day, and, with any luck, gamble as well.

Mr and Mrs J Wartho,

Eastfield Lane,

Dunnington,
