Jo-ann Hodgson on all the hard work that goes into a fun-loving time.

EVERY week ents officers for each of the York University colleges organise nighttime events for students.

These provide a respite from the fatigue inducing routines of lectures, reading lists and essays.

Last week, students were able to laugh away their worries about impending work deadlines at a stand-up comedy night. They were also given the opportunity to dance their way into the early hours at dance events over the weekend, safe in the knowledge that they wouldn't have to drag themselves out of bed until at least midday.

Many colleges have become famous among students for the regular events they hold. Goodricke college is the undisputed home of cheese, hosting disco event G Spot twice a term. Choruses of 'Why do you build me up buttercup?' can be heard echoing around campus just so those who chose not to attend don't feel left out.

Vanburgh College makes the most of its three-room venue by catering for all tastes at its regular 'Planet V' event. Live campus bands are given the opportunity to entertain indie-orientated students, while the more energy fuelled dance heads can escape into glow-stick heaven for the evening in other rooms.

The chrome filled palace of the most modern campus college, Alcuin, provides the perfect venue for stylish R&B and Hip Hop lovers to meet at the Platinum event.

And Derwent's outdoor music fest Big D, held at the end of the summer term, sees all students letting down their hair as they look forward to the free months ahead.

Behind the scenes, a large team of students, including technicians, door security and bar staff, make sure the events all run like clockwork.

The fun-loving party animals owe them a lot.
