In the long term, history will be much kinder to Phil Collins than seems likely at present.
A couple of sordid tabloid stories and total over-exposure in the 1980s and early 90s have tarnished a true talent and a great songwriter's reputation. But the fact remains that Collins has produced heaps of truly memorable tracks.
This not being a greatest hits collection, there are surprises to be found, and a home for some otherwise lost recordings. It's great to hear his versions of Smokey Robinson's My Girl, Irving Berlin's Always & Jerome Kern's The Way You Look Tonight, among the more familiar singles and album tracks.
