THE chief executive of York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, Len Cruddas, is to be made an honorary fellow of York St John College.

Mr Cruddas will be awarded an honorary fellowship for his contribution to the City of York and to the profession of management as students receive their degrees at a graduation ceremony at York Minster tomorrow.

He took up the role of chief executive of the York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce in 2002.

To date his key achievements have included increasing turnover by 320 per cent and winning full accreditation from the British Chambers of Commerce as well as Investor in People accreditation and Customer First quality assurance recognition.

Mr Cruddas originally qualified as a physical education teacher and began his career in leisure management. In 1981 he was part of a team that won the Sports Council's national award for sports centre management.

Other honorary fellowships will go to author and screenwriter Kay Mellor and Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan.

York St John students have been receiving their degrees at a series of ceremonies this week. Don't miss Friday's Evening Press for a full round-up of awards.
