York will pay its respects to its war dead on Sunday during the Civic Remembrance Day Parade.

Marching from Clifford's Tower to the Memorial Gardens, this year's parade will be led by the Normandy Band of the Queen's Division and will be made up of military personnel, veterans, St John's Ambulance, the British Red Cross, Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps, Sea Cadets, Scouts and Guides.

Together they will march from Tower Street over Lendal Bridge to the City Memorial Cross in Leeman Road, where they will be joined by the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, members of City of York Council, the commander of the 15 (North East) Brigade and York Garrison, Brigadier Richard Dennis, and the civic party, led by the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Janet Looker.

At 11am there will be a two-minute silence where soldiers from the 40 Regiment Royal Artillery, based in Topcliffe, near Thirsk, will fire the Minute Gun, followed by the sounding of the Last Post.

Led by the Lord Lieutenant, wreaths will be laid at the Memorial Cross by all participating organisations.

After a service and inspection, the parade will retrace its steps across Lendal Bridge before dispersing near Clifford's Tower.

Colin Northridge, county field officer for the Royal British Legion in North and East Yorkshire, said: "I think it is extremely important to those members who have served in Her Majesty's Forces and lost people.

"It is their opportunity to publicly show their support and appreciation for what they have done. I know when I go on parade I feel very proud to have served with those people and during the two-minute silence I think about all the people who I have served with who have lost their lives."

A full list of services was printed in yesterday's Evening Press.
