Brendan Powell, whose long and successful career as a jump jockey included a win in the Scottish Grand National on Young Kenny, trained at Brandsby by Peter Beaumont, is now enjoying the fruits of his second career.

Powell is fast making a name for himself as a trainer and at Sandown tomorrow has good prospects of taking centre stage with his stable-star Colonel Frank in the £25,000 Future Stars Novices' Chase, sponsored by bookmakers William Hill.

Winner of his last two starts, including one on this course, Colonel Frank is improving at a rapid rate of knots, as he proved at Wincanton recently when he gave a six-length beating to Orswell Crest after a copybook round of jumping.

Even more is promised from Colonel Frank, who has long been the apple of Powell's eye. A tough test awaits him tomorrow, but the seven-year-old has what it takes to complete a hat-trick and is awarded the nap vote.

Graham Lee, who suffered a compound fracture of his right arm in a fall at Doncaster on Sunday, is likely to be out of action until after Christmas. It looks sure to be a costly holiday for the Grand National-winning jockey, who misses the mount tomorrow on No Refuge in the £30,000 William Hill Winter Novices' Hurdle.

The four-year-old, trained by Howard Johnson, was a winner under Lee on his hurdling bow at Aintree recently and he now bids to follow in the hoofprints of stablemate Inglis Drever, who won the corresponding Aintree race before following up under Lee in last year's Winter Hurdle. Tony Dobbin takes over the mount on No Refuge, who looks an exciting prospect.

Boy's Hurrah, also trained by Johnson and another regular mount of Lee's, will also be partnered by Dobbin in the Esher News And Mail Handicap Chase. Runner-up on his last two starts, the gelding has good prospects of making it third time lucky.

Manbow, who has already rattled up a hat-trick of wins for Micky Hammond, ironically with Lee on board, is yet another 'spare' mount picked up by Dobbin, who is fancied to steer the Middleham raider to victory in the williamhillcasino.com Novices' Handicap Chase.

Tony Culhane, who lives near Thirsk, rode four winners yesterday, one at Southwell and three at Wolverhampton, and he returns to the latter venue tomorrow with an excellent chance of enjoying another profitable all-weather venture.

Culhane has a whole host of fancied rides, and can score on recent winner Kingsmaite (2-25), all-weather regular Weet For Me (2-55) and the hat-trick seeking Lake Diva (3-30).

The Malton combination of Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan also promise to figure on the scoresheet, courtesy of recent course winner Paparaazi, who looks up to defying top-weight in the Littlewoods Bet Direct Nursery over six furlongs.
