MR Cadoux (Letters, November 27) is quite correct in highlighting the fact that the recently-approved Traffic Management Bill 2004 will allow the city council to take over the enforcement of some moving traffic offences in the same way as it has taken over parking enforcement.

I would like to reassure him that the implications of the Bill were discussed by the executive at their meeting on November 9.

They were keen to take advantage of these new powers.

Unfortunately, we are unable to adopt them until the Government has published the necessary guidance and statutory instruments and we have no idea when this will be.

I find the situation as frustrating as Mr Cadoux and look forward to the time when we do have the power to adequately enforce the footstreets regulations and the Coppergate restrictions as well as to take action against motorists who flaunt yellow box junctions, bus lanes and left and right turn bans.

Ann Reid,

Executive Member for Planning and Transport,

Grassholme,

York.
