A 33-year-old York man is in hospital after being attacked.
Police are searching for two people in connection with the incident in Water Lane, Clifton, at about midday yesterday.
The victim was left with a serious injury to his neck in the attack, which may have been provoked by an argument between him and the two people police are trying to trace.
Det Con Michelle Falkingham said an implement had been used to cause the injury. The attackers then made off towards Burdyke Avenue.
A police spokesman said: "The victim suffered very nasty injuries to his face, but his condition is not considered to be critical."
A man and a woman, both estimated to be in their thirties, are being sought by police.
The man is described as 5ft 10in, with short dark brown hair. He was wearing a bright green and blue striped waterproof jacket. The woman was wearing a dark blue jacket and is said to be 5ft tall, with long blonde hair and a round face.
Anyone with information should phone Det Con Falkingham on 01904 669456.
