AS a Christian minister concerned for York people, I must express my opposition to the proposal by Merlin Entertainments to establish a Satan's Grotto in the York Dungeon.

For thousands of years, even beyond the teaching of the Bible, it has been recognised that such a being known as the Devil or Satan exists.

He is not a product of the imagination but the embodiment and personification of all evil.

He adversely, and dreadfully, affects all who allow him to influence their lives, wittingly or unwittingly.

This is not some superstitious construct, but a reality.

I object to this exposure of innocent children to such an influence, even if accompanied by adults.

Dungeons manager Helen Douglas implied this was harmless fun: "an anagram of the word 'Santa'". This should not be dismissed in such a careless way.

I understand children will also be invited, if they wish, to sign a scroll addressing Satan. This is in danger of exposing children to evil forces and should not be allowed.

The bible teaches that Christ alone defeated Satan, hence the message of Christmas and Easter. Christ came as light into darkness.

He overcame Satan's temptations during 40 days in the wilderness and conquered him through his death on the cross and resurrection three days later.

Only in Christ, through faith in him, are we safe from such evil powers.

To allow this kind of so- called "harmless" activity in York is wrong and could be damaging to many young and vulnerable lives.

For the sake of the people and children of York I hope Merlin Entertainments reconsider.
