THE penultimate round of the Yorkshire Winter Angling League saw league leaders Anglers' World falter on an out of sorts river.
The Ouse below York was still coloured from mid-week flooding but heavy overnight frosts had seen water temperatures plummet.
The venue's roach population were strangely absent and only the odd
skimmer provided any relief from the bitter conditions.
Brian Richardson of Selby led the individual standings from the peg below the sand-bed in the Donkey Woods. Fishing a small ground-bait feeder with worm and red maggot he found four small bream at regular intervals for his winning
net that scaled a level 10lb.
Team-mate John Cyrowski took advantage of the favoured end peg draw on the Palace Ings and tempted a bream on ground-bait and caster feeder and skimmer on pole and chopped worm for his 6lb 5oz net.
Top Anglers' World man was the consistent Tony Stevenson, who had a brace
of skimmers on feeder and caster from the peg above the bridge in the Donkey Woods.
Others: Wayne Shillito (Marsh Tackle) 3-7-0; Ricky Gaunt (Leeds Angling
Centre) 3-4-0; Tom Gausden (Anglers' World) 2-15-0.
Waterline Wibsey won on the day with a 70-point haul that moves them to within three points of the leaders. Selby took second on the day a point adrift with Anglers' World in third on 64.
The final round on January 9 now looks to be a three-way showdown for the two qualification places between Anglers' World on 10, Wibsey on 13 and Hirst Tackle A on 14.
The Carpvale match proved tough going, with only six anglers managing to
catch on a partially frozen venue. The fish were tightly shoaled in corner peg four from where Mick Green was able to score an easy win with 53lb. Fishing cat meat into the corner he managed to haul out a lucky 13 carp.
Bernard Guy took second spot from peg 14 where he had four carp on pole
and meat to beat off the challenge of Graham Boardley, who was on peg three
and netted five carp on pole and meat for 19lb 1oz.
Other weighers were Johnny Haw 14-8-0; Brian Husthwaite 4-0-0 and Roy
Worsnop 3-8-0.
