THERE is a certain irony in Lloyd Massingham of Rock-Ola music accusing me of intimidation, not by writing to me personally but by sending a letter at me through the Press ('Anger at letter to advertisers', August 2).

I wrote to him along with all the other businesses who chose to help promote the Evening Press's campaign against parking charges. As Mike Laycock's article made clear, there was nothing intimidating in the letter Mr Massingham received. It drew attention to the wider context surrounding the council's finances and asked for constructive suggestions to aid the review of parking charges.

I am not offended that certain people take issue with the council's parking strategy, nor do I consider opposing views as an example of "temerity". I welcome the communication, as would be confirmed by the Goodramgate traders I have met with to discuss parking.

Contrary to the report in the paper I have not received any letter from Mr Massingham. If and when he does write to me he will receive a courteous and considered response, sent to him personally rather than brandished about in the paper, which may be perceived as intimidating.

Coun Christian Vassie,

Blake Court,

Wheldrake, York.
