A TRADER says he is considering moving out of York city centre because business has slumped so badly in the wake of the parking charge changes.
Dave Dee, owner of the Banana Warehouse second- hand goods shop in Piccadilly, says his trade has fallen by at least 25 per cent.
"We are struggling to pay our bills," he said. He said he hardly ever saw long queues of traffic waiting to get into the nearby multi-storey car park nowadays.
He is convinced that ever-higher parking charges and on-street restrictions are a key factor in the decline in the number of shoppers coming into his premises and the city centre generally.
He thinks more and more shoppers are simply heading to a shopping centre, where parking is free and easy.
"They'll go to MFI or IKEA or something," he said.
He said he was now seriously considering moving the business to another location outside the city centre, where parking was still free.
