WHEN BMW's new 5 Series models, the 523i, 525i and 530i, go on sale in the spring, they will be powered by three versions of the six cylinder petrol unit launched in the 6 Series 630i.

The 523i, with its all-new 174bhp, 2497cc engine replaces the existing 520i in the mocel line-up. The new engine, made extensively from special lightweight materials such as magnesium and aluminium, and featuring Valvetronic technology for the first time on a six cylinder petrol in the 5 Series, provides performance and economy.

The zero to 62mph takes 8.5 seconds (9.3-seconds for the automatic) while the combined fuel figure is 33.2mpg (30.4mpg in the automatic). Also, compared to the outgoing 520, torque has been increased by 20Nm (around nine percent) and power has been boosted by 4bhp.

Those wanting more power can look to the 215bhp 525i with a 0-62mph time of 7.5-seconds and fuel consumption figure of 32.5mpg at the combined rate.

The most powerful car in its class, the 530i has the same specification list as the 630i coupe and convertible, and will also be used in the new 3 Series due in the showrooms in a couple of months. Peak torque of 300NM is delivered between 2,500rpm and 4,000rpm, can knock off the zero to 62mph dash in 6.5-secoonds and still returns around 32mpg at the combined rate.

All the new cars are matched to a six-speed manual gearbox, with a six-speed automatic as an option. There is also a sequential manual gearbox available for the 525i and 530i.

The dynamic stability control system provides a couple of new features: brake standby, which shortens stopping distances by preparing the brakes if the drives lifts off the accelerator sharply in preparation for an emergency stop, and rain brake support, a system that improves braking performance in the wet by removing the film of water that can build up on the brake discs in wet weather.

Prices start at £26,350 for the 175bhp 523i rising to £36,950 for the 258bhp 530i sport touring.
