WHITE flannels against a green background have always been a familiar sight in York.

Men and women's bowling teams have competed in many city tournaments through the decades

The sport has remained a favourite with York residents playing indoor or outdoor games.

While delving into our bowling archives, we discovered photographs showing top bowlers from the North, converging on the York and District Indoor Bowls Club in Thanet Road, Acomb, York, during the Evening Press-sponsored indoor bowling tournament.

Another shows the team of former Lord Mayor Jack Wood - taken after a 151 to 93 shot defeat in 1973.

Smart sportswomen dressed in white pose with their bowls in Clarence Gardens in 1981, for the finals of the Evening Press ladies pairs bowls competition.

One picture shows the victory of the successful Minster Bowling Club, standing proudly with captain Brian Kelly, after winning promotion to Division 1 of the York Bowls League in 1976.

Members of the York women's indoor bowls team seem delighted to have reached the quarter finals of the Yetton Trophy in 1983.

And some of the York players who took part in the 1974 Yorkshire Country Women's Bowling Association's North v South game look pleased with their efforts.
