Madeleine's uncanny impersonation of the smoky tones of Billie Holiday is initially discomforting.
Yet as a result, unfamiliar songs sound as if you've known them forever. Larry Klein's immaculate production, spare and mainly acoustic, evokes the relaxed intimacy of a Paris boite. Peyroux grew up in Paris and Brooklyn and Larry Goldings adds French flair to New York cool with a hint of Parisian accordion from his barrage of keyboards. Songs by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Jesse Harris (Grammy-winning songwriter for Norah Jones) are paired with new takes on the 80-year-old title song by W C Handy, and Hank Williams's Weary Blues. The CD pictures Ms Peyroux in Annie Hall style, alternating with morning-after ballgown, which aptly sums up the appeal of this album - quirky and seductive.
