FORMER St Peter's School rugby union ace Alex Drysdale is now in love with rugby league after kicking the winning drop goal in the latter code's Varsity match.

Drysdale's kick clinched a 17-16 victory for Cambridge University over Oxford this week and afterwards the ex-Yorkshire Under-18 and Scotland U16 rugby union player admitted he is a fully-fledged league convert.

The 22-year-old third-year law student said: "I had never played league before October and had just watched a few games on TV but my old friend from St Peter's, Nick Rusling, told me to come along and said that the Varsity match was shown live on Sky. It's been a steep learning curve but I really love the game now.

"I want to continue playing it and, to be honest, league's the sport for me after the Varsity match."

Drysdale was put off representing Cambridge's union team as most of the players were post-graduates, ex-professionals or imports from Australia and New Zealand.

He said: "The league team is more representative of the people who study at Cambridge even if we have to travel as far as Exeter, Bristol and France to find opponents down here."

Drysdale's former St Peter's School mates Rusling and Indraneil Basu also helped the Light Blues secure victory.

Drysdale's father, Richard, is a history teacher at York school St Peter's.
