THE grey skies of North Yorkshire were filled with an explosion of colour as the country's most famous flying team prepared to dazzle with their skill and precision.

Red Arrows pilots practised next season's display at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, in preparation for their public appearances this year.

The RAF Aerobatic Team flew for 35 minutes, demonstrating what we will see when they perform at the Yorkshire Air Show, at Elvington, in August.

Spokeswoman Rachel Huxford said the team practised three times a day, five times a week between out of season flying time, which ran from October to the beginning of May.

They usually practised at their base in Lincolnshire, but had flown at Linton to experience other airfields before the trip to Cyprus.

Rachel said the new display included the Lancaster formation and the "cyclone", which involved an oblique loop.

"The display is very dynamic and they've worked really hard to ensure that as many manoeuvres as possible happen in front of the crowds," said Rachel.

"It's coming along very well and I'm looking forward to seeing it when it has been polished and we've been to Cyprus.

"I think everyone realises there is still some way to go and a lot of hard work before the season starts but I think people will be very proud of the team this year."

The Arrows celebrate the 40th anniversary of their first public show this year, and a new boss and three new pilots have been recruited for the celebrations.
