POLICE were today trying to unravel the mystery behind the death of a young clubber whose body was found in a York street.

A taxi driver saw Danny Adams' body lying in St Stephen's Road, Acomb, in the early hours of Saturday.

North Yorkshire Police do not believe that Mr Adams, 23, of Cornlands Road, was the victim of an assault or road accident, and are now treating the case as an unexplained death.

A post mortem examination failed to determine the cause of death, and further tests are to be carried out.

Police said Mr Adams had been to Toffs Nightclub, in York city centre, and had spoken to friends at about 2.45am as he walked home.

Other witnesses said he may have been walking with another person, and it is known that the occupants of a white van spoke to him at about 5am in St Stephen's Road.

He was found collapsed at about 6am.

Detective Sergeant Steve Smith, of York CID, said police were trying to piece together Mr Adams' movements between 2.45am and 4am.

"From the post-mortem examination, at this time there is no indication of any third party involvement in his death.

"The purpose of our inquiry is to gather evidence for the coroner so he can try to establish what happened in the early hours of Saturday to give some kind of peace for the family."

Saturday's Evening Press reported that Mr Adams' body was found by a taxi driver, who was taking a young woman home from a party. They spotted what looked like "a bundle of rags" in the road, and got out to investigate.

Taxi driver Ken Day tried to wake him, and his passenger felt for a pulse, but could not find one.

Mr Adams' body was taken to York Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police sealed off the street and detectives and crime scene investigators examined the scene for clues during Saturday.

Mr Day told the Evening Press: "When I got a bit nearer I saw a leg stuck out. He was crumpled up. We pulled up and tried to wake him. His head was in a grate."

A neighbour is believed to have called the ambulance service and put a dressing gown over the body.

Det Sgt Smith said: "I have been pleased with the response from the people who have come forward. They have given us useful information and have been quite frank."
