This photograph of a woman driving car no.17 was taken during the Great War.

This car went from Nessgate to Hull Road (as the 'H' in the headlamp shows). Women began working on trams at the end of 1915 as a third of men were in the forces. Ten trams were fitted with Peacock Brake Gearing to their manual brakes which required less strength. The women were given the same wage as male workers - 28 shillings a week - but they were relieved of the duty of changing trolleys round at the termini.

The tram terminus pictured here was outside the vicarage on Haxby Road and this photograph probably dates from about 1914. The shop on the left of the frame is on the corner of Rose Street.

This picture of York's new electric tram was taken in January 1910 opposite the barracks in Fulford Road. The tram depot is just out of the photograph on the left hand side. In the foreground there are pieces of tramline lying in the road which show how close to completion this image was taken.

This photograph shows the official opening of York City Trams on January 20th 1910. It was probably taken at the depot on Fulford Cross. The first car, number 1, left the depot at noon being driven by the Lord Mayor, Alderman James Birch, and Driver J.A.Stewart. It was followed by five other cars. During this first day of operation, 6,786 passengers were carried and total receipts were £35 18s and 5d.

These two electric trams are outside the railway station during the 1920s. In 1918 the tram routes were reorganised as, by this point, there were 23 departures from each side of the city each hour which involved 700 arrivals at the railway station - more than one per minute. The tram pictured on the left runs from Fulford to Acomb via the station. The tram on the right runs from Haxby Road to South Bank, also via the station.
