I wonder if the Press realises how much damage is done to potential customers of our local hospital by references to ''dirty'' conditions etc.

I realise the hospital is not perfect. However, there is a far more constructive way of dealing with complaints.

It is now five years since I was first admitted, via Accident and Emergency, to York Hospital. Although the medical and nursing services were excellent, the standard of hygiene left much to be desired.

After my return home I wrote a detailed letter to the chief executive, listing my concerns.

I received an immediate response informing me that an investigation was underway and inviting me to visit the hospital to discuss my complaints.

This I did, and was surprised by how much work had already been done to correct the problems.

At the end of a very constructive meeting I was invited to visit the ward I had attended to see for myself the improvements. I also visited other wards.

I was very impressed with the seriousness with which my complaint was taken.

Since then I have been a regular visitor to the hospital and have seen for myself how standards have improved.

Despite this, when I was due to go into the hospital earlier this month for a potentially serious operation, my heart sank when I read an article in the Press referring to "dirty conditions''.

I went into hospital armed with a packet of Dettol wipes. I am pleased to say my fears were completely groundless.

I could not have had cleaner conditions or better standards of service in a five star hotel.

So, to anyone who is in the position I was in two weeks ago, please do not worry, you could not be in better hands.
