I WAS saddened to read of Paul Stancliffe's departure from York City for financial reasons after 14 years service.

If memory serves me right he was one of John Bird's signings and turned out to be a great player and fine leader of men, highlighted in City's memorable Wembley triumph. He has carried on the good work in his role as head of the City youth set-up.

What a wonderful example he has been to all who love the game and how disturbing it is to know that it has all ended. I wish him well in the future.

Meanwhile, one reflects on the appalling actions of former directors Douglas Craig, Barry Swallow and Colin Webb in walking away with some £1.5 million between them and ask the question if they hadn't done this would Paul Stancliffe still have a job with City and would manager Billy McEwan's task be just a bit easier?

My sympathy with all three ex-directors - I trust they can continue to live with their consciences.
