Old friends Geoff Lane and Alan Stimpson have bowled over the competition to score a rare trophy double, writes Claire Hughes.

The Acomb Working Men's Club mat bowls pair lifted the South Bank pairs title shortly after claiming victory in the Poppleton Road Working Men's Club open to hold both at the same time.

Lane, aged 59, and Stimpson, four years older, have played sport together for years and started playing bowls 40 years ago.

Said Lane: "It's unusual to win both tournaments and we got a special mention during the presentation.

"It's a good feeling - and they're both nice trophies."

'Houses stand firm against champs

Dringhouses registered their first win of 2005 with an unexpected 7-1 defeat of champions Holgate.

Despite Holgate's only winning rink having a 35-8 advantage, the other three rinks lost by 45 shots overall to let Dringhouses win the aggregate points 92-74.

RI Amateurs' 7-1 victory over Haxby Road was then blighted by their slip to a 6-2 loss in the derby with Corinthians.

Haxby Road countered to topple unbeaten Bert Keech 6-2.

Poppleton maintained their 100 per cent record in division two with a 7-1 win at Stamford Bridge, while an 8-0 win for Osbaldwick over Harrogate puts these two clubs clear.

Dunnington beat rivals Burnholme 7-1 to top division three, but unbeaten Holgate WMC are still in touch with two games in hand.
