IF the then Lord Mayor, Janet Looker, was told her working visit to HMS York would involve climbing up and down ladders on the ship, probably accompanied by a retinue of sailors (not all of them veterans), trousers would seem not only the most practical wear, but also the most modest (May 25).

Janet Looker has been a magnificent 21st century mayor, happy to wear a hard hat, whether on a visit to a school building site, or high up on the Minster's crumbling facade.

One is only sorry her last civic engagement was marred by the comments of an ancient mariner who is so out of touch with the life of our city as to imagine that his narrow views represent those of the community which Janet Looker has served with such distinction, as family lawyer, as local councillor, and as a deservedly popular Lord Mayor.
