RYEDALE trainer Tim Easterby reports Somnus to be in tip-top condition ahead of the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot at York a week tomorrow.
The Great Habton, near Malton, trainer, who won the six-furlong Group One contest with Fayr Jag 12 months ago, is confident of a big run from the five-year-old, who is a best-priced 6-1 favourite.
"The string is looking in good shape and we are very confident of a good week.
"In particular Somnus has been working tremendously well at home," said Easterby.
"He's been going faster than I have seen him for ages and he looks terrific. We are very hopeful of his chances."
Somnus was crowned champion sprinter last season, even though he did not win a race in Britain. He captured two Group One races in France, the Prix Maurice de Gheest and the Prix de la Foret.
The Pivotal gelding made an encouraging reappearance when fourth to The Kiddykid in the Duke Of York Stakes over the Golden Jubilee course and distance last month.
Australian star Fastnet Rock, winner of the Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February, was scheduled to be in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, but has failed to recover from travel sickness following his arrival in England and yesterday it was announced that the horse is being retired from racing and will return to Australia.
