COMMUNITY safety chiefs were urging racegoers to take extra care of their belongings.

With the city's population set to expand by 50,000 every day during Ascot week, residents are being warned to make sure their cars are secure, to keep an eye on their belongings and be aware of pick-pockets.

The Safer York Partnership team will be patrolling car parks and assisting the police in manning the mobile police office where a free mobile phone marking service will be on offer, alongside crime prevention advice.

Partnership leader Jane Mowat said "The focus of our Ascot crime prevention campaign is pickpocketing and theft from vehicles, and we will be placing posters in car parks and cloakrooms encouraging everyone to take reasonable care".
