Sean Gregan, Leeds United's tough-tackling midfielder, has made an early return to training in a determined bid to improve his fitness for the new season.

After missing much of West Brom's pre-season build-up through injury a year ago, Gregan moved to Leeds in September and spent much of the season playing catch-up with players who had enjoyed the benefit of a full pre-season build-up.

He took a long time to win over the fans and after a home game against Leicester he was targeted by a small group who hurled abuse at him and his family in the club car park.

However, after initially considering quitting the club, Gregan changed his mind when hundreds of well-wishers sent him messages of support and his form improved thereafter.

Gregan said: "It was a difficult season for me but I think I won over the majority of supporters. I was five months behind everyone when I came to Leeds and I had been training with kids at West Brom. You can't keep your sharpness doing that.

"I feel that by making an early start to training this time I'll be much fitter from the off next season and hopefully that will show in my play."

Left-back Stephen Crainey and striker Michael Ricketts have also reported back early. Crainey has been out since October with a groin injury and Ricketts spent the final three months of last season on loan to Stoke in an effort to give his sharpness a much-needed boost.

The majority of Leeds' players report back on Monday, June 27.
