Whether Her Majesty wants one scoop or two, or just fancies a 99, a York company will be on hand to cater for all her ice cream needs.

Amid the top hats and frocks, Yorvale Ice Cream will be refreshing racegoers from the rails enclosure to the Royal Box.

The Acaster Malbis company expects to dish out more than 13,000 scoops during Royal Ascot - as well as preparing ice cream for The Queen and Royal Family throughout the week.

But the commission was a hard fought battle to wrest the contract from a southern based ice cream maker.

Lesley Buxton, of Yorvale Ice Cream, said: "I did have to push the case for using a local supplier pretty hard.

"The Queen's party will be eating lemon curd, lemon and mascarpone, mango and orange yogurt ice creams, all made from recipes from Michelin starred chef Anton Edelmann. I'm not privy however, as to whether her majesty prefers a tub or a cone."
