RETURNING from Northallerton to York via Thirsk on Saturday, June 11, after visiting both market towns, my companion and I took the A168 from Northallerton to Thirsk and then the A19 from Thirsk for York.

Beyond Thormanby we turned left on an unclassified road signed Husthwaite.

Just before Husthwaite I stopped and took a photograph across nearby fields of the distant hills and the White Horse at Kilburn.

We took a left and then right in the village for Coxwold and then on past Newborough Priory following signs for Easingwold and rejoining A19 back to York.

If road pricing is introduced it will seriously prohibit car users from enjoying the delights of the wonderful views of the English countryside, particularly those of us of advancing years for whom walking or cycling is impossible.

As for me, I would be prohibited from seeking out the secret byways of my beloved county.

I urge the Government to think again about the introduction of a road pricing policy.
