THE Evening Press report on the smallest removal furniture van in the world sent me spinning off down memory lane.

About 59 years ago the removal vans of the same firm were known world wide as the Big "C" with the letters Whitby C Oliver inscribed on all their vehicles.

The "C" stood for Charles, so whatever happened to the big C?

When serving my time as an apprentice jockey in Malton, I used to ride and look after a really fine horse called Saint Dawn which was owned by Charles Oliver. He was a very tall, moustached, distinguished looking gentleman and a former Lord Mayor of York.

When he "went into the other room", he must have taken the mould with him, never to be seen again.

The words kindness, generous, honesty and integrity were invented for his like. I shall never forget him.
