York City boss Billy McEwan is believed to have taken the Professional Football Association's list of released players on holiday to Cyprus with him.

The non-exhaustive directory currently contains at least 355 names and, like McEwan no doubt, our Minstermen reporter Dave Flett has picked out a team of targets for the KitKat Crescent club.

Wage demands mean the side could not be assembled in its entirety but each individual might be worth an inquiry.

Kevin Miller (36): A goalkeeper who has commanded more than £2million in transfer fees during a career that has seen him top 700 professional appearances, including spells with Birmingham, Watford, Crystal Palace and Barnsley. Was Bristol Rovers' number one last season before leaving on loan for Championship outfit Derby County.

Mark Rankine (35): Played 48 games for Tranmere in League One last season having previously plied his trade at Sheffield United, Preston, Wolves and Doncaster, making more than 700 professional appearances and scoring 41 goals. Might be in the twilight of his career but has avoided injuries, keeps himself fit and is versatile. Born and bred in Doncaster, could be attracted to a move back to Yorkshire.

Luke Dimech (28): Malta's international captain and has played more than 50 games for Mansfield over the last two seasons. Well over six foot tall, the centre-back's aerial presence could be suited to Conference football.

Alton Thelwell (24): Former Premiership defender at Tottenham, his career has gone backwards at Hull, where he has made just 24 league starts in two seasons. If he struggled to find another League club, might be lured by the short switch from Humberside.

Mickey Bell (33): Attack-minded, skilful left-back who has been released by Bristol City after eight years service. Previously played for Wycombe and Northampton and an excellent injury record has seen him make more than 650 professional appearances, scoring 58 goals.

Darren Wrack (29): Cultured midfielder who has spent the last seven years at Walsall having previously played for Derby County and Grimsby Town. Scored more than 50 goals as a professional. He hails from Cleethorpes and will have worked with City boss McEwan at Derby.

Leo Bertos (23): New Zealand-born Greek midfielder who has been released by Rochdale after making 89 appearances for the Spotland club over the last two seasons. Talented player, who is 6ft tall and has also netted 14 times for Rochdale. Might fancy a move back to Yorkshire, where he started with Barnsley.

Martin Bullock (30): Skilful midfielder who played in the Premiership for Barnsley. Has spent the last four seasons at Blackpool but could be willing to return to his non-League roots after starting out at Eastwood Town.

Dean Howell (24): Fast and direct left-winger who caused York City several problems in front of the Sky TV cameras for long-time, play-off contenders Halifax. Has been surprisingly released by the Shaymen and has four years of Conference experience, having also played for Morecambe and Southport.

Mark Rawle (26): Ended last season with Kidderminster Harriers and netted three times in five starts despite their relegation to the Conference. Prior to that, he had been loaned out to Tamworth from Oxford and, while at Boston United between 1999 and 2001, he scored an impressive 32 goals in 40 starts before joining Southend United for £60,000. His overall professional strike-rate of 59 goals from 127 starts is also eye-catching.

Hector Sam (27): Trinidad and Tobago international striker, who joined Wrexham for £125,000 in 2000 and has since notched 40 goals in 93 starts for the Welshmen. Scored 12 times last season Might be reluctant to drop into the Conference but maybe Wrexham boss Denis Smith could give the Minstermen a glowing reference.

Seven former City players are also included on the list alongside those released by the KitKat Crescent club at the end of last season.

They are Tony Barras (Macclesfield), Rob Constable (Leeds), Tom Cowan (Carlisle), Craig Dove (Rushden), Darren Edmondson, Richard Hope (both Chester), Justin Walker (Cambridge United).
