IT would be easy not to spot Artisan's appearance at York Theatre Royal on Thursday. The show comes in the middle of a week of performances by York Opera, who will be taking a breather from Cav & Pag that evening.

Artisan's harmony singing trio of Hilary Spencer, Jacey Bedford and Brian Bedford are regular visitors to York with their distinctly English original songs and humorous entertainment.

By turns serious and amusing, they "don't do love songs", but instead sing Bedford's tales of real people and real emotions: hope and wonder, anger and scepticism, fear and anger, love and longing.

Since forming in 1985 and turning full time in 1989, Artisan have released 11 albums, whose witty, intelligent songs bear the influence of Gilbert & Sullivan, The Beatles, Mozart and music hall.

Tickets for Thursday's 7.30pm concert of songs, harmony and humour cost £10 on 01904 623568.
