A BODY found in the River Nidd at the weekend has been identified as that of a York man who went missing eight weeks ago.

Tristan Long, 29, of Hardisty Close, went missing on April 16, when he failed to meet a relative at York Station. His white Skoda was found on rural grassland near the river at Walshford just off the A1. Police searched nearby woods, fields and riverbanks but could not find Mr Long, and his family were baffled by his disappearance. He had never gone missing before, and had made plans for a holiday to Central and Southern America.

A supermarket receipt found in his car showed he had bought fresh food and groceries only hours before he disappeared, and his house showed no evidence he planned to go away. His passport was still in the flat.

Friends of Mr Long in the UK, Germany, Sweden, France, Italy and Spain were contacted, and posters were put up in Falkirk in Scotland, and London, where he previously lived and worked.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
