CONFIDENT youngster Peter Fox reckons he is on course to smashing the York City Knights try-scoring record having sped his way to joint-top in the division's charts.

The flying winger's two touchdowns in Sunday's win at London Skolars took him level with long-time leader Matt Bramald, of Keighley Cougars, at the top of the National League Two try-scoring table, both on 17.

And that has left him just four shy of the Knights' club record of 21, set by Chris Langley last season, with ten more games to go in the regular season.

"That's one of my goals," declared Fox. "I want to top the charts in the league and also break Chris Langley's York Knights record, and I'm on my way to doing that.

"I'm pretty confident. I believe I'll get the record - if Dan Potter carries on passing me the ball."

Joking aside, Fox reckons his partnership with centre Potter - who is second in the Knights try-scoring table on ten - is paying big dividends.

"At the start of the season we got this partnership going and it's working," he said. "We're really good mates off the field as well, which helps. We do a lot of work in training to get things right between us."

Fox scored only one try in the Northern Rail Cup campaign, but since then has bagged a remarkable 13 in eight league games, the other three coming in three Challenge Cup ties.

He added: "The systems Mick Cook brings create a lot of opportunities for me to score tries. He wants us to push up in support to create breaks and I think I'm a good support player. Once someone makes a break I will be roundabout to pick up the pieces and finish the try."

Fox's other goal this season is, of course, to assist his home-town club in taking the title. His tries have helped them to the top of the table but the 20-year-old former York Acorn ARLC junior says nothing can be taken for granted.

"We're happy with the way it's going but we've got to carry on and be consistent," said Fox, who is on loan from Leeds for the year and has seen his hopes of a Super League call next season boosted with news Rhinos winger Mark Calderwood is to leave Headingley at the end of 2005.

"We don't want to go around saying we're going to win promotion. We've got some really tough games coming up and it's such a close league you don't know what will happen.

"We've got to take it one step at a time. Our next match is at Workington (a week on Sunday) and that's the one we're concentrating on, and we will take it from there."
