TONY Blair refuses to upgrade the A64. Why would he want to? Upgrading any road to help traffic flow smoothly is not what Blair wants.

The Government creates a congestion problem through local councils then blames the motorist enabling the councils to charge the motorist a congestion charge.

Every town and city is told to use traffic management.

These plans create congestion. This is the hidden agenda, to make congestion and introduce a stealth tax.

City of York Council closed more than 88 streets to through vehicles. This is the reason we have gridlock.

The magic trick is to plant the seed in people's heads making them believe congestion exists. Councils then charge to park, creating cash flow of £20,000 a day, topping up the coffers so they have more cash to waste.

Motorways are built without any slip roads to escape jams.

If motorways leading into London had slip roads, people would have the option to leave the road and congestion would be reduced.

Within months jams could be a problem of the past.

Open up all the closed roads, rid the town of humps and related creations, build wider roads, double the lanes on the outer ring road, and turn the A64 into a six lane road.

How is it other countries have better road systems than us?

We pretend to be a leader of the world. Rubbish.

We are one of the worst countries in the world and yet we should be the best.

D Wardell,

Malton Road, York.
