CITY transport bosses were celebrating after the busiest day at the races was also the one when the traffic ran most smoothly.

Peter Eveley, head of highway regulation at City of York Council, said almost all road-using racegoers had once more arrived at their destination by 1pm yesterday.

"Traffic has been the best it has been all week," he said.

"We had everybody into the racecourse by 1pm. In fact the whole of the road in, starting at the A64 was clear by 12.45pm. It took us about 20 minutes down Tadcaster Road and into the car parks. Those who went into B car park off Sim Balk Lane were in much earlier. This is the plan. We are extremely pleased."
