THE traffic flow in York last week was wonderful. It is clear that thousands of people made a real effort to use their cars less in anticipation of Ascot jams.

Some people will have rescheduled meetings to be done by telephone. Others will have used bicycles or walked.

Some may have discovered bus services they had never tried before. Groups may have got together and shared transport. Some will simply have cancelled a trip that wasn't really necessary.

Having pumped up the tyres on the bike, discovered some new telephone technology, identified a colleague who lives nearby or found that a bus journey is not such a terrible experience, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could build on this and each of us reduce the number of car journeys we do each week? Just one less each would be a start.

If we all did a little, together we could achieve a lot.

I am looking forward to a wonderful summer in York with less congestion and pollution.
