YORK-BASED running club Knavesmire Harriers were in good form at the annual Selby Road Relays and the Yorkshire Veterans Road Relay Championships.

A record number of 64 teams competed in the county championships over a 2.5 mile course at Esholt, near Bradford.

Bill Shiveley (14.09) ran first in the Over-40 team, crossing the line in eighth place. Other times were Barry Atkinson (14.06), Darrell Moore (15.34) and Neil Strange (13.19), who ran the fifth fastest leg of the day to bring the team home in sixth place.

Knavesmire's Over-50 team of John Wagstaff (15.57), Neil Holdsworth (15.56) and John Oliver (15.31) finished 11th in their category.

Graeme Adams(19.04), Malcolm Fawcett (18.42) and Dick Hunter (18.:01) finished second in the Over 60 race with Hunter running the third fastest leg in his age group.

Knavesmire Ladies Over-35s were third in their category section. Team captain Fiona Strange (15.32) ran the third fastest women's leg and lead team mates Joy Allen (18.31) and Kate Wiggins (17.15) to bronze medals behind Holmfirth Harriers and race winners Horsforth Harriers.

The Selby event was run over five legs over a 2.9 mile course and saw Knavesmire's veterans team finish third overall and first in their age category.

Shiveley ran a solid opening leg in a time of 15 minutes and 31 seconds followed by Oliver (16.10), Steve Mackley (16.40) and then Moore(17.25), who making his return from long term injury.

Team captain Strange (14:54) ran the anchor leg setting off in fourth place. He went passed Sheffield Veterans to ensure Knavesmire retained their veterans' section title. Doncaster and Stainforth AC won the event with Askern Running Club second.

Knavesmire 'A' finished second in the women's race. Their line-up was Abey George-Plunkett (19.45) followed by Fiona Strange (17.49), Alison Buchan-Grant (21.19), Laura Ross (21.09) and Joy Allen (31.23).

Knavesmire ladies 'B, represented by Pat Boden (20.19), Helen Blackburn (21.44), Elly Treanor (22.38), Julie Wilson (22.26) and Nicola Midgeley (21.11) were fourth.
