PRINCE ANDREW attended a dinner in New York last night to raise much-needed funds for the restoration of York Minster.

A major campaign has been launched to restore the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe to its former glory.

The Duke of York is patron of the appeal and described York Minster as one of the "architectural masterpieces of the world". He said: "I have visited the building on many occasions and never cease to be amazed by its stone and glass.

"We need help to restore the cathedral and it is my hope that this event and the publicity surrounding it will encourage our American friends to visit York and see the Minster for themselves."

The dinner was hosted by Christie's and attended by friends of the auction house, who were given an address and presentation about the cathedral.

The Duke of York was welcomed by the Earl of Halifax, deputy chairman of Christie's UK, and Stephen Lash, chairman of Christie's USA.

Richard Shephard, director of development, said the project will cost about £30 million over ten years.
