Dr John has been in a fury of creativity, cutting charity tracks for his deluged home town of New Orleans and recording his best album in years, N'Awlinz: Dis Dat Or D'Udda.

Now, with punning title at the ready, he pays tribute to Johnny Mercer, the American songwriter who brought us songs such as Moon River, You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby and That Old Black Magic.

Old Mac Rebennack is in good voice, the music flows and the whole exercise is a happy outing, and well worth investing ear time.

Mercernary doesn't have the artistic scope of N'Awlinz, which was truly great, but there are mighty fine moments, including the boisterous Personality and the lovely instrumental, Tangerine.
