A small group of senior citizens were discussing the recent action against rising council taxes, which landed our peers in jail and were considering what could be done locally in support.

Would there be sufficient support in York to march and possibly get banged up ?

It was agreed there would be difficulties, not least of which would be the need for regular ablution breaks but these could be overcome.

The march might start from St Sampsons after everybody had been.

Along Parliament Street into Piccadilly where those in need could nip up to the very nice ones at M & S. Some, caught up in the ladies queue, might have to be left to catch up later. Out into Coppergate, High Ousegate, Spuriergate and Coney St where BHS can provide welcome relief. Hannah may have to hand over the banner to a gent here, if the ladies were queuing again. Then out into New Street, Davygate and St Helens Square, where the proclamation of intent could be made outside the Mansion House, followed by Land Of Hope And Glory and Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Good-bye.

Demands would be made for the Prison Authorities to arrange night slopping out as required and for those who couldn't get back to sleep to have their lights left on, if Full Sutton was to be made Even Fuller Sutton. Some may want to watch television, listen to Classic FM or write protest letters on their lap tops and organise escape committees.

I'm an oldie, so I can see the funny side of the joke which our elected servants (would be masters) have made of demands on our Council Tax and cost of living.

You young ens should take it seriously. You will not always be wage earners as the cost of living rises beyond your reach. Show them who really is boss now, while you can.
