A TEENAGER has been summoned to court over an alleged hit-and-run crash that led to the death of a ten-year-old boy from York.

Sean Hamilton died when he was hit by a blue Ford Transit panel van while crossing Holgate Road as he made his way home following a trip to the cinema with friends on Saturday, October 3, last year.

North Yorkshire Police said yesterday that an 18-year-old from Carlton, near Selby, had been summoned to court for failing to stop and failing to report the accident. At the time of the crash, he was 17 and the force said he was driving the van when Sean was struck.

He will appear before magistrates in Selby on May 5 and has also been bailed pending further inquiries into the collision itself, in addition to his forthcoming court date.

Four other men arrested in connection with the investigation have now been released without charge.

Sean, from Spindle Close in Foxwood, suffered serious injuries in the collision, which happened at about 8.20pm near the Iron Bridge, Holgate, and was pronounced dead at York Hospital.

The death of the Our Lady’s Roman Catholic Primary School pupil left his community stunned and grief-stricken and at the funeral service at Our Lady’s Church in Acomb, Father Pat Smith described the young football and rugby league fan as “special and cherished” and “God’s gift to us all”.

Last week, The Press reported how police had closed Holgate Road between its junctions with Dalton Terrace and Hamilton Drive East for almost two hours to allow them to “further investigate” the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
