I SEE from The Press, on February 12, that Nestlé is to relocate the war memorial to its (Rowntree) employees who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
Would it not be possible to place the memorial in a more prominent position, where it could be viewed more easily by York people? The entrance to the factory is not really an ideal place.
I am aware of the memorial because John Miles, who was best man at my parents’ wedding, is remembered on it.
He was killed in Burma on March 12, 1944. He was a private in the West Yorkshire Regiment.
At the time he joined the army he was living with my grandmother, Annie Lee, and her family in Cemetery Road.
I would also be interested if anyone has any memories of him they could share with me.
