SUTTON Bridge is due to reopen for cars and light vehicles this weekend, after it was closed for repairs last month, writes Dan Bean.
A temporary vehicle barrier and speed humps will be put in place to restrict traffic to 10mph and a width restriction of two metres will also be in operation.
The 18th-century bridge, which links Elvington and Sutton-upon-Derwent, was damaged in an accident and closed in January.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council and City of York Council announced yesterday that it could reopen. Symon Fraser, East Riding head of strategic highways and planning, said: “It’s good to see that the work to bring the bridge back into use is progressing.”
Thomas Fitzpatrick, of Elvington Village Store, said: “I’ve heard there might be another closure later in the year when the weather is better, but this will dramatically improve life for our store.”
