A YORK apprentice scooped silver in a national competition celebrating the achievement of students in the heating and pipe fitting industry.
Nick Lester, 25, who works as a mechanical and electrical engineer for York-based building company SES, battled against four other finalists in the SkillPIPE competition.
The three-day challenge recreated a series of real-life work situations which put the finalists’ knowledge to the test. Nick said: “The standard of the competition was very high, so I’m delighted to have done so well. I really enjoyed working and competing with the other guys.”
He won a cash prize, tools and equipment, as well as being presented with a certificate and trophy.
The overall winner of the competition was John Clark from Leeds. Like Nick, John is training at Leeds College of Building. The competition was organised by training experts SummitSkills in order to promote standards and skills across the industry.
