A WOMAN has been killed after being hit by a lorry on a North Yorkshire motorway.
The tragedy happened just before 2.30am today on the southbound cariageway of the A1, just south of Catterick village, with police closing both lanes of the route immediately afterwards. The northbound lane reopened at around 5am and the southbound lane was brought back into operation around three hours later.
The victim, who was on foot, died after being hit by a white Mercedes heavy goods vehicle, but it is not yet know whether she was on the carriageway or by the side of the road.
North Yorkshire Police - who confirmed the crash was not caused by icy weather conditions which have swept across the region - say the woman was in her early 40s, with a slim build and dark hair tied back in a ponytail, and was wearing dark outdoor clothing. She is believed to be from the local area but has not yet been identified.
Anybody who saw the collision or has any information about it should contact Traffic Constable Tony Leonard at the Richmond road policing group on 0845 6060 247.
